River Frome, Angepena

After the flinty, hard and forbidding country up around Illinawortina, this spot on the River Frome was just paradise. The Frome eventually finds its way north where it finally spills into Lake Eyre South nearly 400km to the north. What a sight it must be when this creek runs, here it is only 50 odd metres wide, a narrow point near Mudlapena Gap. I remember it flowing past Marree, across the Birdsville Track, back in 1989, when I lived there. I’ll have to look see if I still have some photos of that. SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "River... MORE

Once over the hills and down the gutter that serves as a track we came to Old Illinawortina ruins. I think I’ll call the track Bitter Springs track (there is a spring or a mill about halfway called “Bitter Springs”) but I think it might be the hilux that was a little ‘bitter’, after the punishment that was meted out to her springs! 19km in about 2 hours. After we left Arkaroola we checked the map and headed into the Gammon Ranges – Vulkathunna National Park, via “The Needles” and North Well. The idea was to try a track marked on the map, down through to Old Illinawortina station ruin and out through Yankaninna station. Ha! Best laid plans and all that! Early on I realised that the track hadn’t been maintained for years, probably hadn’t even been driven on for years, but you know how it is, “just a bit further, just a bit further”, then you say,...
