Near Idninha

About 17km SE of old Illinawortina this is the view north towards Arkaroola. We had to head back east from Idninha as the track was fenced off out through Yankaninna and Mt Serle. A result of irresponsible visitors (probably) and annoyed land holders coming to a head. Looking at the country, it looks like they have enough to contend with already. Barrarana Waterhole

Barrarana Waterhole

Bararrana Waterhole on Arkaroola is accessible easily via the Echo Camp backtrack or a bit over half an hour walk from the other end. This is the lowest I have ever seen it. There was probably more water in pools further down but we didn’t venture that far along the gorge. Hard to imagine that when it does rain the water pours through the narrow gorge dozens of metres deep! Once the rains stop and the flow abates and the water settles, the pools are deep and clear and make Bararrana Waterhole one of most beautiful spots to visit... MORE

Echo Camp backtrack (east end)

Leaving the Arkaroola Creek valley, the Echo Camp backtrack climbs 100 metres or so from the valley floor to give a great view behind back to Bararrana Gorge and towards Echo Camp, and to the east over Lake Frome. Not a good photo, but it does show the lie of the land and the stress that even the Mulga trees are under due to the drought. (April 2008) Here we’re looking south west to Bararrana Gorge on the left and Dinnertime Hill in the background on the right. Echo Camp Echidna

This echidna was poking around the rock at Echo Camp waterhole on Arkaroola. It was unperturbed by Charlie and my presence. Charlie and the echidna, Echo Camp waterhole, Arkaroola “Waterhole” was a bit generous, a smelly green puddle, as I said in the previous post it is really dry, still magnificent though, getting to see an echidna is always a buzz. Note the digging spur (elongated toenail) on this ones hind foot. SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Echo Camp Echidna", url: "http://www.flindersranges.com.au/2008/04/13/echidna-echocamp/"... MORE

Echo Camp Track

This photo shows the track that comes up and over the spur and down to the Echo Camp Waterhole. It really is quite a steep descent. This is a restricted , one-way track maintained by the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. There are some challenging sections and some magnificent scenery over it’s length. The country around here is the driest I have EVER seen it. SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Echo Camp Track", url: "http://www.flindersranges.com.au/2008/04/13/echo-camp-backtrack/" }); [Read more...]

Wilpena Creek

The next morning after brekkie, we went for a walk, saw a wedgie (wedge-tailed eagle) climbed a bit of breakaway country and had a look around. That’s Wilpena Creek in the background. Campfire

Everybody knows it….that the most precious commodity is time. Pity we don’t do better things with it. Sometimes you have to take a chunk where you can. Back in April I managed to sneak a three night trip in with Charlie. He hadn’t really been camping before, you know in a swag, with a campfire. So while the girls (Mum and his big sister) were playing ‘rellies wedding preparations’ in Adelaide, WE sneaked away. (Me, Charlie and Gypsy the Wonder Dog) I had to show the boy a couple of my old stamping grounds... MORE
