Wilcolo Track

The Wilcolo Track in Flinders Ranges National Park would have to be one of the best ‘value for effort’ walks in the Flinders. The 9.2km circuit is listed as a five hour walk on the National Park website, but we found it quite an easy walk (2.5 hours) with plenty of photo stops along the way. Great variety of scenery – the peaks of Wilpena, pine covered valleys, looking back over the Bunyeroo Razorback & a little bit of spring water along Bunyeroo Creek. My Rating 9.5/10 SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Wilcolo Track",... MORE

Walking the Flinders Ranges

Tony Smith, of Rawnsley Park, has performed above and beyond the call of duty. Besides taking this photo of yours truly, he recently spent three days on different trails with me, looking at trails for a possible third guide to SA walks (myself being the author of WalkSA volumes 1 and 2). Dear Tony (poor bugger) and I did the Wilcolo Hike (9.2km) on the first morning and then followed it up with a 35km mountain bike ride back to Rawnsley from the Bunyeroo Valley. The next morning we walked the last leg of the Heysen Trail (17km) from the... MORE

International Visitors Flock to Rawnsley Park

Work will start on four new luxury eco-villas at South Australia’s Rawnsley Park Station in November, capping off a solid year for the Flinders Ranges’ tourism operator. The $1 million expansion will bring the total number of eco-villas to eight (six one-bedroom and two, two-bedroom), with each featuring the same stunning views, secluded location, stylish interiors and quality facilities. The new villas will also enable Rawnsley Park to cater for special interest groups and small fly-in groups. Since opening its luxury,... MORE

Looking Northwards over Yalpara Station

This is the view to the north from Valkyrie towards Yalpara. The sky was washed out so I put a blue rinse through it! Mountaintop Rockpool

After about a 45 minute climb we made it to the top. I didn’t think it would be such a climb so didn’t bother bringing water. However we were pleasantly surprised to find a rock pool left by recent rains, full of fresh, clear water. Boxcar Willie or Warraweena Willie?

Willie popped in to the TWANG! exhibition at Orroroo, part of the A Brush with Art festival, on his way up to Warraweena for a few days. Seems his bushman skills, that he began learning in Africa, extend to campfire singalongs. Gave me a great demo while we had a coffee last Saturday, with a surprising repertoire and even an Afrikaans folk song thrown in. He says that Aussies don’t have it in their culture to sing along round the campfire. More’s the pity I reckon! SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Boxcar Willie or Warraweena Willie?",... MORE

Valkyrie, near Orroroo

Valkyrie is a property close to Orroroo, owned by Andrew and Patsy Weckert from Brinkworth. I spoke to Andrew not long ago and he told me how much more he loved farming up here compared to his home country in the mid-north. Andrew and Patsy are very excited by the new growth emerging each year, and the diversity of the remnant vegetation. They have fenced off some areas of the hills totally to conserve the native flora and put in new fencing to strictly manage grazing on the rest of the property. A shining example of land utilisation and... MORE

Wilpena Pound Resort in new hands

End of an Era! With the sale of Wilpena Pound Resort to the Anthology group, many will miss the association Wilpena has long had with Keith and Lynette Rasheed. Up until recently Lynette served on the FROSAT board, a post she has held for about 25 years, providing invaluable advice to the board, it’s staff and operators in the Flinders ranges. International marketing her speciality, she was always ready to go in to bat for the Flinders Ranges, and always generous with her advice. Many will say that it won’t be the same, influential... MORE
