Port Pirie Centenary Regatta, October 18th

The Port Pirie Rowing Club will host their Centenary Rowing Regatta in Port Pirie this Saturday, 18th October 2008. This Regatta celebrates 100 years for the Port Pirie Rowing Club and is expected to attract up to 100 rowers from Port Pirie, Adelaide and the Riverland.

Previous Port Pirie Regattas have been highly successful with visiting rowers impressed by our Solomontown Beach venue and views over the Southern Flinders Ranges. Local spectators have also enjoyed the spectacle of competitive rowing on our river.

Records show that competitive rowing in Port Pirie dates as far back as the 1870s. This year celebrates 100 years since the formation of the existing amateur rowing club and represents a major milestone for the sport in Port Pirie.

The Centenary Regatta will be predominantly a Masters program with rowers competing from 27 years. We expect to be hosting rowers actively competing well into their 80s.

Races commence at Solomontown Beach from 9.00 am and finishing 3.00 pm and will include single sculls, doubles sculls, fours and eight races throughout the event.

Our “Solly Beach” offers a great venue for rowing and spectators. Entry is free and catering will be available throughout the regatta. So drop in and see one of Port Pirie’s oldest sports in action. All welcome.
