Bob Kennedy and the legendary UK locomotive Flying Scotsman at Peterborough in 1988 on its journey west from Broken Hill. The Flying Scotsman was in Australia in 1988-89 as part of the nation’s bicentennial celebrations. Whilst here, Flying Scotsman established a new record by steaming the 442 miles (711 km) from Parkes to Broken Hill. This was the longest non-stop run ever recorded by a steam locomotive. Country News Orroroo, January 14. The good effects of the late storm are not lasting as the weather is again as hot and close as it can possibly be. In this town we had only a small quantity of rain, whilst in the hills – not half a mile away – it fell in torrents, filling up large waterholes and stone quarries. Request for Tender for railway infrastructure removal Now….. After serving residents of the Orroroo district as a means of communication, passenger transport, a common carrier and tourist attraction for over 120 years it seems that the remaining section of the ‘Quorn line’ emanating out of Peterborough will be ‘ripped up’ in the latter part of 2008. This story from 100 years ago comes from the Quorn Mercury via the Adelaide Observer, Saturday 25 April, 1908. “A workman, while dismantling a sheep van at the Quorn Locomotive Workshops, discovered a nest of hen eggs (12 in number) in a recess on top of the bogey, between the body of the vehicle and the axles.
